CONTROL "Misanthrope" (CD) L. White Records

I had been meaning to get round to sampling the aural delights produced by
Control for a while but time and money, especially the money part, had
stopped me from hearing them. Luckily, oh joy of joys, Lee chucked this cd
in my direction to review. I'll give you 4 words to describe it in a
nutshell. LOUD. POWER. ELECTRONICS. CACOPHANY. The type of music, if 'Power
Electronics' can be described as music, made by Control will only appeal to
99.9% of the music buying public and as such it needs to grab you by the
balls to stand out from the myriad of others bands producing this type of
music. There's nothing really wrong with this recording as such. In fact it
has all the requisite components in place usually associated with this
genre. Various samples and muffled distorted vocals are all present and
correct. Ear crunching, squealing throbbing electronic noise emanate from
the speakers as they should. Even the provocative song titles, which you
would expect, like 'Sexual Predator' and 'Murder Epidemic' are here and are
par for the course. Yet it did nothing for me I'm sad to report. I'll be
consigning it to the ever increasing pile of cds marked 'so so' which are
currently gathering dust on my shelves. I've overdosed too long listening to
this stuff and need to hear something out of the ordinary before I can give
it a glowing review and this release from Control just fails to make the
grade. If you fancy dipping your toes into the murky waters of 'Power
Electronics' for the first time then this release is as good a place to
start as anything else readily available. Discerning buyers may wish to look
elsewhere for their thrills. So where has the originality and innovation in
music gone? Perhaps with their next release Control will eventually provide
the answer.
