Halthan - Collapse in Progress

The Finnish band Halthan already impressed me with its retro-spirited
first mini-album, but this one is even more powerful material. Collapse
in Progress consists of fluid, well-moving power electronics, with some
screamed vocals added into the mix. It's a massive, yet not too total
wall of sound, with just the right amount of structure to keep the noise
together.

Halthan's style brings to mind several of the greats of this style, from
BDN to IRM, without having to be at all ashamed in that company. The
essential parts have been taken from the common material of power
electronics, the rest is very much Halthan's own. The structure of the
pieces varies from track to track, but quality never falters. This is a
show of controlled strength, a show in which rhythm comes out of nothing
in particular and power comes from every single sound. Despite all of
the material being great, one track still manages to rise above the
others: Bloody Empire, the final piece, in which everything is in
perfect balance.

This is an extremely high-quality record. An essential purchase for fans
of power electronics.
