“This Dismal World” is a dark concept album about the ‘Four Nobel Truths’ – the central teachings of Buddhism explaining the nature of suffering (dukkha). Legendary cult industrial act Dissecting Table from Japan and Germany’s dark ambient/industrial project Anemone Tube join forces to perambulate the stony path of the four noble truths: suffering, its causes, the possibility of its cessation and how it can be overcome.

With the use of field recordings exclusively made in a mausoleum in China in 2007, Anemone Tube gains insight into the first truth of suffering, the impermanency of all forms of life and the inevitableness of death. “In The Mausoleum“ is a dark industrial epic conjuring up a sinister, threatening atmosphere. With the crushing power-electronics track “From Anthropocentrism To Demonocentrism”, based on field recordings made in buddhist temples in Nanjing and Shanghai, Anemone Tube consequentially confronts the listener with the origin of man`s craving for sense-pleasures and self-perpetuating egocentrism.

Dissecting Table`s monumental industrial track “1000 Tones“ is dedicated to the 1000-armed Guanyin – being known as the goddess of compassion to save beings from suffering and ignorance. Almost like a self-mortification Dissecting Table is reciting the complete 25th Lotus Sutra about The Universal Gate of Bodhisattva Kanzeon (“the perceiver of the world`s lamentations”). Accompanying with ritual drumming, diverse analogue treatments and deep growls, Dissecting Table creates a threnody for today’s dejected world.

REVIEW @ NOISE RECEPTOR (Australien):

Anemone Tube / Dissecting Table – This Dismal World LP Peripheral Records 2013

‘This Dismal World’ is a split recording from the German Anemone Tube and the Japanese Dissecting Table which is conceptually inspired by Buddhist related themes. To quote from the promo blurb it is: “a dark concept album about the ‘Four Nobel Truths’: suffering, it’s origin, cessation and the path leading away from suffering”. This concept is also expanded upon with a printed insert which includes the lengthy written piece: ‘The Lotus Sutra Chapter Twenty Five: The Universal Gate of Bodhisattiva Kanzeon’ (which specifically ties in with Dissecting Table’s contribution). Additionally the cover depicts Guanyin Bodhisattva aka the ‘Goddess of Compassion’ in the form of a 21-metre high bronze statue located in Longxing Monastery, Shijiazhuang.

Anemone Tube lead off and based on the sheer quality of their recent output (specifically referring to the ‘Death Over China’ album), it is great to see the new material is as equally stunningly here. Effectively Anemone Tube’s style of taking various field recording elements and welding them into abstract industrial/ dark ambient soundscapes is fully on display here (the field recordings utilised here were evidently made in a Mausoleum and other locations in China). Of the two presented Anemone Tube tracks they are slightly on the noisier side – and great for it. ‘In The Mausoleum’ is digitally crisp, bass heavy and sweepingly evocative in its cyclic tone and perhaps reminiscent of earlier Inade. Alternately the second track ‘From Anthropocentrism To Demonocentrism’ aligns more towards a power electronics structure, its sharp tonal squall and looped sampled elements is clearly recognisable as that of Anemone Tube.

Dissecting Table’s contribution ‘1000 tones’ is presented on the second side of the vinyl which forms a singular monolithic 20 minute composition. Here the loose and chaotic track infuses stoic ritual percussion, clanging metallic elements, an abundance of noisy outbursts, chanting Buddhist monks (…presumably reciting the written tract from the Lotus Sutra), screamed quasi extreme metal vocals etc. Here these disparate elements are loosely melded together to generate a heady dose of chaotic industrial madness – Dissecting Table style of course. Although I may not be a massive Dissecting Table fan, objectively I can say the track is a heavy hitter and based on the above description you should know if it is suited to your listening preferences.

As a whole ‘This Dismal World’ delivers solid material from both projects, but from my perspective Anemone Tube’s tracks hit the high mark of the two.

REVIEW @ HEATHEN HARVEST:

I’ve never been able to reach an absolute conclusion as to if the conceptual approach has a place in noise. In the ideal scenario, for me noise is sufficiently saturated with energy, emotion and images and I don’t need anything else but the sound itself to experience it at its fullest. However, I’ve seen and heard bad examples of concept records, and I’ve heard some good ones too. But one thing that I know for sure is that This Dismal World — the brand new split between the German dark ambient/industrial act Anemone Tube and Dissecting Table, whom are a cult yet quite underrated (in my modest opinion) figure not only for the Japanese, but the global industrial/noise scene — is among the few magnificent examples of symbiosis between idea and sound that I have heard. Their record gravitates around the Four Nobel Truths, which in Buddhism explain the nature of suffering.

I’ve never been a fan of religion nor mythology, and I guess I never will be. However, in This Dismal World, both projects were able to turn their influences into an organic element of their music. Everything on this record, from its concept through its design and until its very last bit of noise is embodied in a massive — and I have to admit — extremely intense and aggressive atmosphere. It is by no means pretentious, nor forced; on the contrary — we have noise at its finest, retaining its destructive and pure nature, while at the same time touched and accomplished by something subtle and personal. Which, just as the cover image is out of focus, can be interpreted from many different angles, none of which is correct or wrong.

The first side of the split is in the hands of Anemone Tube. The music that Stefan Hanser has been making for the last 15+ years is an extremely crafty, yet abrasive reverence to sound destruction. Still, this signature atmosphere which he achieves, for me, will be many times more atmospheric and picturesque than all of the sterile and hyper-produced records that we’re force-fed by the majority of ambient labels nowadays. The material which we’ve been offered here has spent some time maturing. The field recordings, which are the backbone of Anemone Tube’s opening piece, were made in a Chinese mausoleum six years ago, and I don’t know if it’s that or it’s just in my head, but you can clearly hear this in the piece. Grim and rotten, it’s soaked with the smell of past times spent in the endless stasis of death. “In the Mausoleum” moves slowly and almost gently, but it is exactly this that makes it dangerous, for the blackness inside it is spreads over you unnoticed. And believe it or not you’ll find a saviour following it in “From Anthropocentrism to Demonocentrism”, a piece that is far more lively and eclectic, and which also originates from field recordings, only this time made in Nanjing and Shanghai Buddhist temples. There are voices that slowly pile up in the track. They are human, but they are also distant and unknown; they are no longer real, they are something that lurks only in the cursed dimensions of Anemone Tube’s deformed reality.

If Side A was an evil yet a bit merciful introduction to This Dismal World, Dissecting Table shows no remorse. His piece is like a violent and possessed rusty machine. In its twenty minutes, it wanders between harsh industrial, noise, and power electronics that are backed by heavy ritual drumming. Among all this shattering, intense and destructive sound abuse you’ll find Ichiro Tsuji reciting, screaming, and preaching the whole the 25th Lotus Sutra about The Universal Gate of Bodhisattva Kanzeon (the perceiver of the world’s lamentations). “1000 Tones” is a mantra, a sonic rape, concentrated emotion and a hostile message from another world. You need to experience such music, you need to encounter such artists. They are a great reminder you are not safe in this world. And yes, this applies to both sides of this record.

Re: ANEMONE TUBE / DISSECTING TABLE Split LP neues Review!

REVIEW @ AFRICAN PAPER:
