Vital Weekly:
The inner-sleeve of Zero Degree's "Probe" presents the final words from the last replicant in Ridley Scott's Blade Runner: "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched c-beams ... glitter in the dark near Tannhauser Gate. All those ... moments will be lost ... in time, like tears ... in rain. Time ... to die". The blend of futurist atmospheres and melancholia that is expressed by the replicant in his final hour beautifully expresses the feeling and atmospheres on latest album from Zero Degree being a joint venture between the two German artists Matthias Erhard and Bernhard Korth. Both artists has a background in the experimental scene before this new release. During the playtime we find ourselves in melancholic soundscapes drawing associations towards early German krautrock-band Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze. Though the dark atmospheres of electronic ambience have been pulled into modern expressions of IDM with some great rhythm textures working underneath. The sound of Zero Degree reminds me of the legendary Gridlock-project that was released on the sister-label of Ant-Zen, Hymen Records. In opposition to Gridlock though, Zero Degree generally creates longer compositions giving plenty of time to let the atmospheres drift into the brain of the listener. The result is nothing short of excellent. Anyone interested in Gridlock, IDM, German Krautrock of the more spacy kinds should check out this project.
