RASHOMON´s – Ashcan Copy (Film Music Vol. 3) will be Hlava´s 004th sacrifice.

After Matt Thompson´s escape from planet ZG he began his journey to conquer our own planet with Rashomon. His way hither led him via „The Ruined Map (2007 Mirrors Rec. (UK))“ and „The Finishing Line (2010 Hinterzimmer Rec. (Ch))“ directly to the temple. Here he unveils „Ashcan Copy“, his third and newest effort to win control of form and time. His implements are the creepiness, the terrifying and the unpredictable – proverbially, the dread! An amalgam of 70s prog soundtracks, Transylvanian Folk, grotesque images and anxiety.

ASHCAN COPY (FILM MUSIC VOLUME 3)

Rashomon is the brainchild of London-based Matt Thompson. A founding member of Guapo, he has been developing the Film Music series under the Rashomon name since 2004. Previous instalments have been inspired by the bizarre narrative discontinuities of directors such as Hiroshi Teshigahara and Albert Zugsmith (The Ruined Map : Film Music Vol. 1) and highly disturbing 1970s public information films (The Finishing Line : Film Music Vol. 2).

Over a year in the making, Ashcan Copy (Film Music Vol.3) contains interpretations of music from unreleased films from Italy, Japan and the USA (among others), dating from the 1950s to 1970s and sourced from film archives across Europe. These eight tracks expand on the source material to include elements of noise, folk, psychedelia, prog and jazz noir, while still remaining faithful to their origins. Unavailable in any other format and largely unknown until now, this music can at last be heard.
For fans of Ennio Morricone, Goblin, Popol Vuh and Bohren und der Club of Gore.

Der ehemalige Guapo-Musiker Matt Johnson veröffentlichte 2011 sein drittes Soloalbum unter dem Namen Rashomon. Die Alben von Rashomon liefern Soundtracks zu unveröffentlichten oder gar unvollendeten Filmen, die in einigen Fällen wegen verstörender oder bizarrer Inhalte von den Entscheidunsgträgern nicht freigegeben wurden. Manchmal waren es auch Finzanzierungsprobleme, die die Veröffentlichung verhinderten. Unter den Filmen, für die sich Matt Johnson interessiert, finden sich u.a. ein japanisches Monster Movie, zwei Thriller, ein Beispiel für tschechischen Surrealismus sowie ein Avantgarde-Streifen aus Australien und ein Chaoten-Film über die US-Jazz-Szene Ende der 50er Jahre. Es darf jedenfalls stark angenommen werden, dass die Filmmusik von Matt Johnson aufgrund von Beschreibungen und nicht aus eigener Erfahrung als Zuschauer entstand.

Die beim HLAVA-Label erfolgte Veröffentlichung von "Ashcan Copy (Film Music Volume 3) - Music from unreleased Films" beschränkt sich auf eine limitierte LP-Ausgabe auf durchsichtigem Vinyl. Es ist also gewissermassen ein Liebhaberstück, das mir nochmals die Erkenntnis bestätigte, dass es Spaß machen kann so etwas in den Händen zu halten.

Bei der Inspiration nicht weiter überraschend, sind die Instrumenals überwiegend atmosphärisch und finster ausgefallen. Nur die akustischen Gitarren im leicht folkig beeinflussten "Hob Hurst's house" wirken wie ein kurzes helles Licht auf dem ansonsten von bizarren Stimmungen geprägten Album. Viele der Instrumentals von Matt Johnson setzen sich aus analogen Keyboards (darunter Fender Piano und Moog-Synthesizer), Bass-, Maultrommel- und Gitarren-Spuren zusammen, die gelegentlich von Schlagzeugsamples begleitet werden. Als ich in "Jigora" die Schlagzeugsamples von Bill Ward (aus dem Stück "N.I.B." vom ersten Black Sabbath-Album) entdeckte, musste ich dann doch schmunzeln. Ansonsten wirkt "Jigora" wie ein elektronisch eingefärbtes Krautrock-Stück, das einem Horror-Film angepasst wurde. "The nightwatchman" bietet eine kreative Verschmelzung von Jahrmarkt- und Kammermusik mit Elementen der Musique Concrete. "The door has two side" präsentiert gutklassigen Avant-Rock (mit viel Mellotron), der vor einem Schuß Bombast nicht zurückschreckt. Ein wenig von Guapo schimmert da auch durch. "Blue Mirror" klingt wie eine Huldigung an elektronischen Krautrock der 70er, die Freunden von Bands wie Popol Vuh, Ash Ra Tempel zusagen wird. An "Pacemaker" mag ich die kreative Nutzung von Mellotron, die aufzeigt, dass dieses Instrument mehr kann, als Streicher und Flöten zu imitieren. Die bedrückende Stimmung von "Pacemaker" variiert zwischen avantgardistischen Dark Ambient-Momenten (hin und wieder auch mit Autoharpsolos) und dem eigensinnigen Avant-Elektronik-Krautrock.
