ACM 1006: 3“ CD-R in mini DVD-style case

After several releases by R.X.o.N. based on free improvisation, this set of five tracks showcases the artist’s work as an electroacoustic composer for stage productions. The music on this CD was originally composed for a performance by the Vietnamese-born artist Lienus Nguyen, “trying to deal with the nightmares of his childhood”. If the objective of the music was to convey the sense of tension, fear and panic that growing up in a war-torn country may entail, then this mix of tribal/martial percussion, noises, extremely dark drones (which almost makes classic practitioners of the genre like Lustmord seem light-hearted in comparison) and a very effective use of suspense between near-silent pauses and sudden screams, crashes, and other noises most certainly did the job.

Although the title “Vietnam” suggests a strong referentiality of these compositions, this is not actually the case. The atmospheric and emotional impact of the music does not rely on the simultaneous presence of corresponding images, and the seemingly realistic sound samples R.X.o.N. sometimes builds into the music do not necessarily need to be identified as sounds “of something” to serve their structural role as emotional triggers. While there is an almost unbearable tension at work during most of these closely interrelated five tracks, the whole CD eventually builds towards a catastrophic, if not liberating climax of almost pure noise by layering loop after loop of early Throbbing Gristle-style low-fi sonics upon another.
