Bailey, Derek/Hautzinger, Franz - S.T. 2001 CD Grob

Bakr, Rashied/Borgmann, Thomas/Brötzmann, Peter/Parker, William - Cooler Suite 2003 CD Grob 14,50 The music is so straight and uncomplicated as it can be: Parker plays a bass that nothing can shake, stable as the trunk of an old oak tree; Bakr plays the drums with a feathery pulse, but always wide awake and driving. Together this results in a foundation upon which the power players Borgmann and Brötzmann give each other their hand, as if dreamily in wedlock, the solos pass by, they allow themselves (and us) melodic flights, but above all they celebrate a powerplay as if free jazz had finally established itself as the folk music of the 21st century.

Beirut Slump/Teenage Jesus and The Jerks - Shut Up And Bleed 2009 CD Atavistic
A fully-realized, thoroughly saturated archival reissue compiled by Lydia and longtime confidante/agent provocateur Tom Garretson, collecting rare, live and unreleased material from el No Wave flagship band.

Bennink/Brötzmann/Van Hove Balls 2002 CD Atavistic
John Corbett's Unheard Music Series presents a superb reissue of the legendary FMP label's second-ever release: "Balls", waxed by Peter Brötzmann, Han Bennink & Fred Van Hove-- the essential recording by one of the most influential free music trios of all time. UMS has preserved the original package design, even simulating the uncoated stock used on the decades-out-of print LP; the monumental music has been remastered from the original tapes.

Black Serama - Holy Subversive 2008 CDR Dirtydemos
Black Serema are a brother and sister duo from Sheffield and they have their debut release out on Dirty Demos. It goes under the wonderful title of 'Holy Subversive' and it's pretty fucking crazy sounding with it's spooky female vocals and disturbed guitar wails and strange electronics. Brian reckons it sounds like someone doing elephant impressions while trying to saw a guitar in half with a saxophone.

Boje/Kussatz/Miller/Wiedermann - Berlin Bones 1981 LP FMP
Andreas Boje-trombone; Thomas Wiedermann-trombone; Harry Miller-double bass; Manfred Kussatz-drums Recorded live by Jost Gebers on May 16th,1981.

Bosetti, Alessandro/Krebs, Annette - S.T. 2003 CD Grob
minimalism, noise (but the later is not meant in the sense of a racket, but as a kind of unmediated sound), rustling, consciousness of structure and spontaneity, all of these experience a new value through these musicians - above all through Annette Krebs' way of playing the guitar.

Butcher, John/Minton, Phil - Apples Of Gomorrah 2002 CD Grob
A duet of both seems so obvious that the only critical question about this cooperation is why it hadn't happened sooner. These recordings took place over a period of several years and were post-produced and mastered over a long space of time. There are mostly short improvisations to be heard, 17 pieces in a little more than 40 minutes, which are, however, so densely cut and arranged, that a extremely tense arc results in the length of the CD.

Carl, Rüdiger/Johansson, Sven-Ã…ke/Williamson, Joe - Hudson Riv (Autumn in New York) 2003 CD Grob
The music is radical because it detonated the concept of the musical: their performances or better: performances are constantly gesticulate and theatrical and can afford to play around with clichés, because their music fulfills no cliché. Seldom does improvised music gain such a committed as well as always surprising expression.

Coleman, Gene/Hautzinger, Franz /Sachiko_M/Yoshihide, Otomo - Concert In St. Louis 2004 CD Grob <
The strong rustling improvisation does not deplete itself, but rather brings forth new constellation of their playing together (also next to each other) It is slow, peaceful, very relaxed flowing music. But whoever listens closely will hear the tension and the exertion, the wrestling to create expression.

Coltrane, John - Art Blakey's Big Band & Quintet 2008 LP Doxy <
originally released on Bethlehem Records, Recorded in NYC in 1957.

Corbett Vs. Dempsey Gallery - Eye & Ear: Musician<->Artist 2007 CD Atavistic <

Corbett, John/Heavy Friends - Humdinger:14 Improvisations And A Monograph On Failed Wind Instruments 2001 CD Atavistic
Humdinger is a lovely" collection of musical improvisations by extraordinary Alabaman avant-guitarist/co-founder of the Trans Museq label & The Improvisor magazine/omnivorous surrealist/primary theorist of the "Object Guitar Technique"/hilarious elder statesman of improvisation Davey Williams, and Chicago's main man about town: charming gadfly/bon vivant historian/cagey raconteur/ venerated educator/matchless reissue producer, John Corbett-- featured here on a variety of non-farming implements such as acoustic guitar, turntable, synthesizer, radio & keymonica."

Dafeldecker, Werner/Lang, Klaus - Lichtgeschwindigkeit 2003 CD Grob
The music of Dafeldecker and Lang also appears to be stagnant. It doesn't get going anywhere. A powerful, droning organ chord, a bowed bass and both are perceived as if they were chiseled for eternity. Music that sounds irrevocable, great and sublime, fascinating and off-putting.

Davies, Hugh - Warming Up With The Iceman 2001 CD Grob
The former musical biography of Hugh Davies is worthy of a legend: the 58 year-old from London was an assistant of Karl-Heinz Stockhausen for a long time in the 60's. He was the successor of the famous Stockhausen dissident Cornelius Cardew. When he returned to England at the end of the 60's, he jumped into the eye of the typhoon. In Europe the improvised music emancipated itself from New Music and from Free Jazz. From 1968 to 1971 Hugh Davies played with the group that most resolutely represented the non-idiomatic, "instrumental" music of the British: the Music Improvisation Company.

Davis, Miles - Diggin' With The Miles Davis Sextet 2008 LP Doxy

Die Enttäuschung - S.T. 2002 CD Grob
Jazz CD. Really. The first to appear in GROB's program, the first that could ever appear in GROB's program. The Enttäuschung is a super group of modern jazz. Axel Dörner plays trumpet, Rudi Mahall bass clarinet, Jan Roder bass and Uli Jenneßen drums, all personalities of the Berlin jazz scene, all internationally known. With Alexander von Schlippenbach as a guest, they interpreted the entire works of Monk while in Hong Kong.

Reissue with members of Mars, DNA and Pere Ubu. Track 1 recorded at Hi-5 Studios, tracks 2 to 5 recorded and mixed at B.C. Studios, tracks 6 recorded at Fun City, October 1985, tracks 7 to 10 recorded spring 1987 by Don King.

Drumm, Kevin/Lonberg-Holm, Fred/Walter, Weasel - Eruption 2003 CD Grob
Eruption pushes the process of reflection -- reflections upon improvised music, the contemporary character of Free Jazz, the energy of Speed Metal, and of course the reflections upon Takayanagi -- even further towards independence. One hour of music, 40 tracks (the liner notes, an attack upon a saturated and self-righteous Free Jazz scene, are in code in the track titles).

Fall, The - Live In London 1980 2005 LP Earmark
Originally released in 1982 by Chaos Tapes in a limited edition of 4000 copies, the soon impossible-to-find live tape captured all the unpolished energy of a post-Grotesque / pre-Hex Fall, becoming one of their most legendary live performances.

Fall, The - Room To Live 2005 2LP Earmark
Released in September 1982, just months after the classic Hex Enduction Hour, the ever-iconoclastic Smith created Room To Live as a kind of 'fake-left' to fans and critics expecting a repeat performance. Just as the stench of success was beginning to drift in the band's direction, Room served to clear the air and send the faint-hearted running in the other direction. Now featuring an entire album of bonus tracks!

Fall, The - Rough Trade Singles Collection 2003 LP Earmark
By the time The Fall arrived on Rough Trade's doorstep in 1980, Mark E. Smith & co. were already well known for their unique brand of disjointedly angular pop punk, having left behind a steady trickle of inimitably brilliant singles and LPs since the band's inception in 1977. During their roughly 3 years with the label, the band proved itself to be at the height of its creativity, releasing a flurry of singles that included some of their best work to date.

Fall, The - Totale's Turns 2004 LP Earmark

10 CD // 104 pages booklet // total 13h 44mins.

Four Fishermen, The - Fallen Oak 2008 3"CDR Dirtydemos
The Four Fisherman is a project of mainly Ben McElroy, who receives help from a bunch of people on drums, double bass, clarinet, violins and cello. The music is folky with touches of country & western and psychedelica and would not have been out of place on Constellation Records or Static Caravan."

Frey/Gallio/Voerkel - Tiegel (1981) 2007 CD Atavistic

Friedl, Reinhold/Sharp, Elliott - aNostalgia 2002 CD Grob
Sharp is, however, not only a master of eclecticism. His strengths consist in stamping his style opon this confusion. No matter if it's rock, free jazz or a composition for a string quartet, Sharp plays Sharp music in the first place: dense, dramatic, loaded with atmosphere, standing under enormous tension, and thoroughly emotional. Always precise and in the surprising moment, laconic as well. His duo with Reinhold Friedl makes these characteristics clear.

Fuchs/Hollinger/Van Hove - Berlin Begegnung 1983 LP FMP

We are very proud to present Guillaume's debut solo album 'Le Lieu'. Here we have pure epic soundscape and hypnotic rhythmical pieces. Drone undercurrents drift and pulse, while dense waves of processed guitar morph into lush glitchy tribal atmos. Drift into another world. special.

Geesin, Ron - A Raise Of Eyebrows 2003 LP Earmark
Best known as the co-author of Pink Floyd's "Atom Heart Mother", this tape manipulator and multi-instrumentalist released his debut on the Transatlantic label in 1967. But Reasonable"), to odd spoken interludes ("Positives").

Konk Pack - Warp Out 2001 CD Grob
After the Big Deep (GROB102), Warp Out is the second album from KONK PACK, the all-star trio of Thomas Lehn, Tim Hodgkinson and Roger Turner. We had already noted when we announced Big Deep that KONK PACK was a working band that has regularly toured since the end of 1998 and is very interested in continuously working together. The musical approach, therefore, bursts apart a narrow conceptual understanding of improvised music.

Lehn, Thomas/Lovens, Paul - Achtung 2003 CD Grob
This special duo constellation rests in this freedom of cliches. Although the music is occasionally incredibly dense and present, it can hardly be fixed. Is it energy powerplay? Finely linked sound research? Post Free Jazz? English School? Is that a kind of duet for percussion instruments? Or electro-acoustic music par excellence? Is it what one expects? Or something completely different? Lehn and Lovens know, in any case, how to surprise us-in the logical sense of the word! Because, when someone suddenly calls out Achtung!" [Look out!] that doesn't mean by a long shot that we are prepared for what will come. "

Lunch, Lydia - Smoke In The Shadows 2004 CD Atavistic

Marchetti/Noetinger/Voice Crack - Double_wash 2001 CD Grob
The cooperation with Lionel Marchetti and Jérome Noetinger is doubly different on double_wash. On the one hand, both Frenchmen work, musically, in a similar field; to a large degree, they also use found objects in their electro-acoustic improvisations. On the other hand, the recordings made in the Winter of 1998 are not a pure documentation-they were re-mixed in the Summer by Marchetti above all, but also by Möslang. What's being released is a CD that is committed to improvisation as well as to electro-acoustic music.

Möslang, Norbert/ Müller, Günter - Boom_box 2004 CD Grob
Boom Box is one of the first recordings of Norbert Möslang after the break up of Voice Crack, his legendary Duo with Andi Gühl which lasted a good 30 years. It was performed in October 2001 in Cologne's Loft with Günter Müller.

Moslang-Guhl (Voicecrack) - Knack On 2001 CD Atavistic
Knack On" was released in 82, and in the interim, they must have come upon something that sent them on towards their path to Voice Crack. On this record you'll here them crossing the line, moving past the improv w/electronics sound of the Tony Oxley/Allan Davies, Paul Lovens/Paul Lytton, AMM, MEV etc. axis, jumping headfirst into everyday SOUND."

Pere Ubu - New Picnic Time 2000 LP Get Back
3rd LP, released Sep. 1979. LP // 10 tracks // 180 gr. Vinyl reissue.

Pere Ubu - Song Of The Bailing Man 2002 LP Get Back
Originally released in 1982 by Rough Trade. Continuing in the spirit of The Art of Walking, this is a fine, occasionally wonderful record that sounds inspired, invigorating, confounding, disturbing. At this juncture Pere Ubu was more art and less rock, a brilliant band breaking every rule of aesthetics. David Thomas with Mayo Thompson (from Texas psychedelic legends Red Krayola), Anton Fier, Tony Maimone and Allen Ravenstine.

Pere Ubu - The Art Of Walking 2001 LP Get Back
"It is obvious that (the history of) Pere Ubu should not be thought of in terms of a linear development-- reducing its entire operation and presence to an exclusive concern for 'working and succeeding in' rock and roll. Unfortunately, most criticism-- of Pere Ubu, of many other folks-- assumes that words have one meaning, that desires point in a single direction, that ideas are logical; it ignores the fact that the world of language, noise and desire is one of lack, insecurity, interruption, struggle, blundering, disguises, ploys, embarrassed grins." (Ian Penman, New Musical Express, 8/30/80 ) Originally released in 1980.

Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance 1999 LP Get Back
New Wave - Punk classic, originally released in 1978!

Prehn, Tom Kvartet - S.T. 2002 CD Atavistic
The music for this LP was recorded in Copenhagen in '67 and issued in a very small edition on the V 58 label.

Preliminary Saturation - Staring At Empty Eyes 2008 CDR Dirtydemos
All of the pieces last around twenty to thirty minutes. 'Staring At Empty Eyes' is slightly under thirty minutes and is more alike the concert I heard, less a noisy beginning. Here things are 'mildly' noisy at the beginning with rotating sounds (mechanical objects on surfaces?) which gradually goes down in volume but cranks up in frequency. Once arrived in the area of a few crackles they built up their sound and end up with much noise.

Reynolds, Ambrose - Greatest Hits 1982 LP Zulu
Solo LP by member of Liverpool minimal electronic duo Pink Industry. Recorded, played, etc, etc at home - Ambrose Kelly Reynolds.

Rova Orkestrova - Electric Ascension 2005 CD Atavistic
Massive & intense in-studio interpretation of John Coltrane's masterwork, Ascension- as performed by an all-star ensemble featuring The Rova Saxophone Quartet, Nels Cline (Wilco & more), guitar legend Fred Frith, Ikue Mori (formerly of No New York stars DNA), turntable wizard Otomo Yoshihide, plus other stellar guests.

Rova Saxophone Quartet - As Was 2000 CD Atavistic
Simply put, As Was is a masterpiece of American creative music. These huge quartet recordings from the band's first incarnation with Andrew Voigt were first issued on Larry Ochs and Henry Kaiser's legendary Metalanguage label in '81, and have never been previously available on CD.

Rupp, Olaf - Scree 2002 CD Grob
Scree is a record that reveals a musician at the height of his creativity. Everything that follows will sound different, can only sound different. Of course, Scree is the result of radical improvisation (and also in this sense everything later sounds different, since it is a matter of real-time compositions that are bound up with the moment of performing and are per se not repeatable). Scree is also the result of years of hard work on his own music.

Schiano, Mario - On The Waiting List 2004 CD Atavistic
Mario Schiano's 1973 nonet opus, originally released on King Records! Schiano is one of the founding figures of free music in Italy, an intense and often uproariously funny alto saxophonist, bandleader and high-conceptualist who has been spreading his own postmodern eclecticism since the early '60s.

Schistosoma Japonica - Kankei UFO From Zanryu-shinen 2009 CD PSF
Volume 3 in the ongoing Japanese Avant-Garde Cassette Reissue Series.

Seth Nehil - Flock & Tumble 2009 CD Sonoris
Flock & Tumble is another fine example of his new direction : shorter tracks with an almost song-like structure and a large sound palette that includes the human voice as material. Flock & Tumble explores haphazard clusters, abrupt shifts, percussive rattles and gentle clouds.

Sharp, Elliott - Arc Two: The Seventies 1998 CD Atavistic
His earliest recordings. Including live and studio material dating back to 1972.

Sharp, Elliott - Arc Three: Cyperpunk And The Virtual Stance 1998 CD Atavistic
Nascent computer-based musical hybrids generated at Elliott's Zoar Studio, circa 1984-'88 ... the birthplace of techno? Perhaps.

Sinnataggen - Stompa Og Stine 2008 CDR Dirtydemos
'Stompa Og Stine' is the second release by Bristol/Oslo based artist Sinnataggen, and what a gem it is too. Hamish returns with seven tracks of glitchy playful electronica, created by blending shards of instrument melodies with digitally manipulated cut up sounds, beats and field recordings.

Sonoda, Satoshi - Early Works of Satoshi Sonoda 1977-1978 [Memories of Yasushi Ozawa] 2009 CD PSF Memorial album for the late Fushitsusha bassist, Yasushi Ozawa, who passed away last year. The album collects recordings from the late seventies made by Ozawa's friend and musical collaborator Satoshi Sonoda. A vital document of the late seventies scene, featuring performances by members of Gaseneta, ANALkISS, GAP, etc. Recorded between Sep 1977 and May 1978

Sound_00 - Ambience 2006 CDR Dirtydemos
40 minute engaging mood setting piece. Spooky dark ambient. Sound_00 is the experimental static drone project by Antonio Dimitrov, who is based in Skopje, Macedonia. Making music is the main focus of his hetic lifestyle, although he has many other projects that keep him busy.

Steamboat Switzerland - Wertmüller 2004 CD Grob
The Hammond organ post-progrock and post-death metal trio of the Swiss men Dominik Blum (organ), Marion Pliakas (electronic bass) and Lucas Niggli (drums) has included numerous compositions of other composers in its program, has worked out an acoustic set (with piano instead of organ, and an amplified acoustic guitar instead of the electronic bass), has played two-fisted rock sets, curated festivals, and has merged into larger ensembles.

Steamboat Switzerland - Zone 2 2007 CD Grob
Steamboat Switzerland -- Dominik Blum, organ; Marino Pliakas, e-bass; Lucas Niggli, drums -- are a rousing live band who have developed an absolutely individual way of playing and expressing themselves out of their examination of sludge metal, post-serialism and free jazz.

Stryi, Wolfgang - Letzte Stücke 2004 CD Grob
The present recording documents the solo performance of Wolfgang Stryi at the Frankfurt Pol-Festival in 2000.

Sun Ra & His Outer Space Arkestra - Music From Tomorrow's World 2002 CD Atavistic
Tangerine Dream - Electronic Meditation 2002 LP Earmark 18,90 One of the first electronic punk albums in history, When TD?s debut Electronic Meditation was recorded, there was virtually no electronic music equipment available at all and yet the band managed to make unusual sounds by using everyday objects, such as a sieve filled with dried peas, an old office calculator, 2 old iron bars and parchment paper.

Tangerine Dream - Alpha Centauri 2002 LP Earmark
Alpha Centauri (1971) is an album by the German electronic music group Tangerine Dream. The music on this album is quite different from Tangerine Dream's first album Electronic Meditation, due to a heavier reliance on keyboards and electronic technology, although they still mostly remain in the background: the dominant instruments on the album are organ and flute. The shift in instrumentation still resulted in a new, exciting atmosphere, dubbed by Edgar Froese himself as Kosmische musik.

Toukasei-Bunshi - Meta-Inorganicmatter Meta-Newlon 2009 CD PSF
Performer: Hironari Iwata Volume 2 in the ongoing Japanese Avant-Garde Cassette Reissue Series.

Trio X (Joe McPhee/Dominic Duval/Jay Rosen) - Live In Vilnius 2008 2LP NoBusiness
A fantastic musical performance took place on 27th March 2006 at Vilniaus Congress Hall. Three musical giants -- Joe McPhee, Dominic Duval and Jay Rosen (also known as TRIO X) made that evening unforgettable for their fans. Rich, colourful, intense, played almost on a telepathic level, this music is a true masterpiece of this amazing group.

Tudor, David - Microphone 2004 CD Cramps

V.A. - Pioneers - The Beginning Of Danish Electronic Music 2009 2CD Ljud
Finally! A compilation that holds the earliest recordings of Dansih electronic music. The cd contains works by Danish electronic pioneers Else Marie Pade, Jørgen Plaetner, Bent Lorentzen, Gunner Møller Pedersen, Fuzzy, Svend Nielsen and Svend Christiansen. The booklet contains interviews with all the composers except from Plaetner who died in 2002, and a general introduction to the environment surrounding the Danish electronic musicians in the late 1950 - early 60's. The music has exclusively been offered to LJUD who are very grateful. We cleaned the reel tapes, digitalized the music, made interviews etc. The double cd contains a lot of goodies: Tons of so far unreleased music and a piece from 1963 by Jørgen Plaetner where Danish poet Jørgen Gustava Brandt reads a poem on top. One of the earliest recordings in Denmark where music and poetry blends together.

Vandermark, Ken/Joe Harriott Project - Straight Lines 1999 CD Atavistic
Ken's enlisted the help of four of the Mighty V5 to craft this lyrical Project Homage to the Late, Great, Jamaican-born Genius... Positively Ornette-Esque jazz!

Wada, Yoshi - Earth Horns With Electronic Drone 2009 CD EM
A world premiere from Yoshi Wada and EM Records/Omega Point: the first-ever release of "Earth Horns with Electronic Drone", recorded live in 1974. Combining four of Wada's self-made "pipehorns" (made from plumbing materials, over three meters in length), with an electronic drone tuned to the electrical current of the performance space, this is a lost masterpiece of early minimalism, placing Wada rightfully in the pantheon with La Monte Young, Phill Niblock, Maryanne Amacher and Alvin Lucier.

Werther/Wittwer - I 2000 CD Grob
Michael Wertmüller and Stephan Wittwer remember the great times, when bands such as Alboth! or Painkiller fused metal and free jazz-but Wertmüller and Wittwer do it only in order to develop their own definition of energy loaded improvisation in the middle of well-known quotations and stylistic loans.

Wertmüller, Michael - Die Zeit. Eine Gebrauchsanweisung. 2004 CD Grob
The compositions of Michael Wertmüller, as diverse as they may be, can all be seen as contributing to solving the problem, how does density originate? Density -- mediated as energy, brute force, loudness, tempo, etc -- results here from extremely gracefully built structures that are folded into each other, linked, and associated such that they result in a great whole. But the graceful build is not exhausted in the compositions, but only elevated. It is audible all along as a trace, as a necessity (as reason, cause).

Wicked Witch - Chaos : 1978-86 2008 LP EM
EVIL PSYCHO MACHINE-FUNK FROM 80s WASHINGTON, D.C.

Williamson, Joe - The Ungrateful Carjacker 2003 CD Grob
It has become quite commonplace that, since the solo albums from Peter Kowald, Barry Guy or William Parker, not only has the contrabass been emancipated, but also accepted as an equal instrument in improvisation, and recognized as a solo instrument. Nonetheless, solo bass recordings are considered unwieldy-one is simply too accustomed to perceiving the bass as an accompanying instrument, responsible for the solid foundation of the groove.

Wittwer, Stephan - Streams 2001 CD Grob
Eleven years after World of Strings, Streams is the second solo record from Stephan Wittwer. If World of Streams was a live recording, a, if you wish, naked guitar record, then Streams presents itself as multi-layered, complex but thoroughly listenable textures. It reflects Wittwer's work with (live) electronics, which has led into a surprising, yet absolutely logical synthesis (or better, symbiosis). What is guitar and what is digitally processed, what is played live in now time and what was synthesized later-all this is no longer clearly recognizable. But it's not a question of this. Feeding from differing sources, Streams has become a great, multifarious shimmering river.

X-Ray Spex - Germfree Adolescents 2001 LP Earmark
Imagine if Da Vinci had painted the Mona Lisa on his very first try, well that's essentially what X-Ray Spex did when they recorded Germfree Adolescents. The year was 1978 and gender stereotypes, consumerism and conformity all crumbled to dust when the braces-clad Poly Styrene let out her first ear-shattering shriek... if Rotten is punk rock's King then Styrene is its Ace.

Young, Roland P. - Isophonic Boogie Woogie 2009 LP EM

Reissue of the legendary 5-track first LP (plus 2 bonus tracks) from horn wizard & original underground FM radio DJ Young, featuring soprano sax, clarinet, and electronically-processed bass clarinet. An enjoyable outing from a neglected musician. Cosmic afro mimimal electronic winds recorded in 1970s San Francisco.
