After some years working and making field recordings in remote Northern and Central Australia, a year in Germany, from late July 2004 to July 2005, initiated a return to the piano for Robert Curgenven. Beginning in the height of summer through autumn?s rusted descent to winter, delimited by the twin poles of Berlin?s burgeoning sound art scene and contemporary just-intonation composition, Robert?s approach to piano found form in moments of sustain, release and confluent tensions, sans attack, and structure in the fundaments of his clear and personal field recordings. Unprocessed, spacious and minimal, yet full and evocative: atemporal, open spaces juxtapose resonances within smaller man-made architecture; overtones within a grand piano merge and move with the harmonics of landscapes? topologies.

From the fragile orange light of dawn amongst the awakenings of a city, hinting at skies beyond (exit:city intro), the settling dampness, faraway thunder rolls and cricket calls as a tropical thunderstorm passes into the distance by a ridge, unfurling moments of withheld calm (still (reprieve)), to light wind and snow falling in a valley in the rural south of Poland amidst winter?s cradlings (winter part III). From the interstice opened by the seasons? penultimate precession to silence unfolds a reprise, akin to climbing out onto a rooftop beneath bright constellations in a clear sky (unlisted track open:space part I & II). In this collection of pieces the tension between Cage`s open window and Feldman`s closed harmonic milieu share a room, inside and outside flow into one another, reframing an emotional narrative pianissimo.

cichaczem (?something done quietly or as a surprise?, in Polish) moves across landscapes and seasons which invoke quiet and a stillness. Mixed by hand without any digital signal processing, cichaczem preserves an emotional subtlety which is vulnerable, patient and warm. Its dynamic layers of sound feed one another, merging seamlessly with the world beyond your open window, continuing long after the final notes have shyly taken flight.
