Agnel, Sophie Capsizing Moments 2009 CD Emanem
The whole of a solo set performed at Les Instants Chavirés near Paris. Sophie Agnel's preparations, neither static nor fixed, evolve during the course of her playing as she adds, moves or removes an object, or replaces one artefact with another. These preparations include disposable water cups, nylon fishing-line, bouncing balls, aluminium ashtrays, aluminium foil, industrial nylon, inner-tube rubber and polished rock all of which result in a remarkable sound world far removed from that usually associated with the piano. This is her second solo CD - the first (on Vand'Oeuvre) was made in 2000, and since then she has appeared in several duos and trios with a variety of musicians."
Ahlen, David We Sprout In Thy Soil 2009 CD Compunctio
Handmade edition from Swedish Compunctio. Pop with a masterful blend of indie and hymn, which has been compared to John Dowland, amongst others. David's angelic voice is backed up by guest musicians such as Mariam Wallentin, Emil Svanängen, Johan Berthling, Stefan Östersjö, The Boy Soprans of Uppsala Cathedral Boy's Choir and more.
Arc (Sylvia Hallett/Danny Kingshill/Gus Garside) The Pursuit Of Happiness 2009 CD Emanem
SYLVIA HALLETT (violin & electronics, voice), DANNY KINGSHILL (cello, voice), GUS GARSIDE (double bass & electronics). First formed in 1988, arc have developed, through improvisation, a collective language that draws on the European textures of the violin family (with a little bit of voice added). This is their first album to use live electronics, at times effectively increasing the group to a quintet. They previously released two albums of acoustic improvisations in 1992/3 on Uneasy Listening and Slam.
Bailey, Derek/Tanaka, Min Music And Dance 1996 LP Revenant
These live recordings of Bailey's 1980 'accompaniment' to Japanese dancer Min Tanaka, previously available only on a privately-released cassette, amply document Bailey's command of a highly individualized atonal language. LP // clear vinyl // 2 tracks // appr. 53:47 mins.
Beresford, Steve/Evans, Peter/Lee, Okkyung Check For Monsters 2009 CD Emanem
The three players work extraordinarily well as a unit, as each has a clear relationship to both scumbled mass and elegant poise. The short improvisation that rounds out their Roulette set, Egokrlo-nar, manifests this perfectly. Beresford plays with Satie-like song fragments and Mikrokosmos clusters as Evans' breath darts in high arcs and splays out in metallic circular breathing, while Lee is devilishly swooping and percussive. This trio has made scrabbling power into elegant play.
Blindhaed Whether That Will Make People 2008 LP Ini.itu
Our first release for ini.itu is a long piece realised by Blindhæð in the first six months of 2008, leaning towards a “cinema for the ear†experience, using processed natural sounds that might evoke a not so minimal Steve Roden, a less obsessive Asmus Tietchens, or an extended Iannis Xenakis' Concret pH. 1 sided LP // 33 RPM // 19:36 mins. // limited to 250 copies.
Blithe Sons, The The Great Orthochromatic Wheel 2009 LP Family Vineyard
These five songs combine nature's melodic pull and minimalist songs forms summoned by a miniature orchestra of eclectic instruments. Each LP side flaunts a different depth of the Sons, one recorded outdoors and the other inside. The indoor set consists of slow-motion ballads built on hymn-like organ, nylon string guitar, analog drum machine & stark percussion.
Blüme, Martin/Lehn, Thomas/Minton, Phil/Wassermann, Ute Backchats 2009 CD Creative Sources
Ute Wassermann (voice, whistle), Phil Minton (voice), Thomas Lehn (analog synthesizer) and Martin Blüme (percussion). Recorded in Bochum and Köln 2008. Mixed and mastered by Thomas Lehn.

Casserley, Lawrence/Linson, Adam Integument 2009 CD PSI
LAWRENCE CASSERLEY (signal processing instrument and voice) & ADAM LINSON (double bass, live processing and sampling) met first when Adam joined the Evan Parker Electro-Acoustic Ensemble for the Free RadiCCAls festival at the CCA, Glasgow in November, 2004. They formed an almost instant rapport, which has continued ever since. During Lawrence's European tour in May, 2007 they met again and performed with the Ensemble in Cologne, after which Lawrence spent several days in Berlin. For two of those days they recorded together in Adam's studio. On the first day they stuck to their basic instruments - Adam on bass while Lawrence was processing. On the second day they experimented with adding Adam's own processing and Lawrence's voice to the mix. Most of the tracks on this CD come from the first day. The enthusiasm, excitement and energy of those sessions will be abundantly clear from this CD.
Connors, Loren The Curse Of Midnight Mary 2009 CD Family Vineyard
Recorded between Connors' eight volume Unaccompanied Acoustic Guitar Improvisations LP series and the folk albums he would make with Kath Bloom, these nine pieces meld those distinct, haunting styles. Connors, singing in a trance like moan, reforms the Mississippi Delta blues on acoustic guitar with flashes of melodic hooks and a percussive guitar style that erupts into boogie-woogie riffs and other world spirituals.
Connors, Loren/O'Rourke, Jim Two Nice Catholic Boys 2009 CD Family Vineyard
These two nice Catholic boys, Loren Connors and Jim O'Rourke, met at the crossroads each night during a 1997 European tour.
Eckhardt, John Xylobiont 2008 CD PSI
John Eckhardt brings the technique and sensibility required by the music of Xenakis, Feldman and Ligeti to this debut recording of double bass improvisations recorded in 2007. Some of the sounds on this CD might suggest electronic manipulation or overdubbing (which have nowhere been used) - one of Eckhardt's principal musical strategies is to explore the polyphonic potential of a given playing situation, and another is to concentrate to a somewhat obsessive degree on a seemingly restricted area of instrumental technique until it yields up its inner variety and complexity.
Edwards, John Volume 2008 CD PSI
The first solo CD by John Edwards, increasingly recognised as one of the most significant players of his generation. Recorded in splendid detail by John Wall in 2008, these 9 tracks are a very fresh take on the possibilities of unamplified double bass playing, making it a major entry in the solo bass literature. This solo recording is an unusual and rare offering that comes from a musician who performs every day, every week, and appears on over 100 records. It's a selection of sounds, melodies, and gestures from this characteristic spectrum, combined with behaviours belonging to a virtuoso, and with those that can only be learned from persistent jigsawing or by illuminating and fusing all user manuals." (From the notes by Marek Tuszynski.) "The record of the year." (Steve Beresford)"
Eisenbeil, Bruce/Hamilton, Tom Shadow Machine 2009 CD Pogus
The artists hybridize the language of electronic sound through Eisenbeil's guitar and Hamilton's virtual analog synthesizer, and the live-in-the-studio tracks insure that the performances impart maximum physicality and spontaneity.
Evans, Peter Nature/Culture 2009 2CD PSI
A 2008 sequel to his highly-acclaimed first solo CD 'More is More' on psi 06.08. Peter Evans writes: Over the past couple of years one of my main creative outlets has been solo trumpet performance. These discs are meant to show various aspects of my music's development and were recorded in two different settings (studio and concert) and under two different circumstances. Jazz musicians have often referred to the playing of a solo as 'telling a story', which is essentially how I look at this music; it is an opportunity to state possibilities and tell stories that are short, long, true, false, unfinished, overlapping, fantastic and mundane.
Evans, Peter More Is More 2008 CD PSI
Peter Evans is an astonishing new voice on that most demanding of instruments - the trumpet. This set of solo improvisations locates Evans at the centre of the next generation of players. Recorded 2005.

Feiler, Dror/Marhaug, Lasse No More Drama 2008 LP No Fun Productions
Sometimes sounds like borbetomagus playing in the middle of a storm, sometimes sounds like being in the middle of a bombing in Palestine. A Picture of this record should be next to every definition of Noise music. Lasse Marhaug plays in Jazkamer and has at least 300 other great projects solo and with other people. Dror Feiler served as a paratrooper in the Israel Defense Forces, and refused to serve in the occupied territories in the early 70's. He is now a Swedish-Israeli musician and artist and has been living in Stockholm, Sweden since 1973. He is active as a composer of modern music and enjoys giving ear problems and headaches to classically trained musicians. The most brutal vinyl record you will hear this year. Limited to 300 copies.
Fernández, Agusti Un Llamp Que No S'Acaba Mai 2009 CD PSI
AGUSTà FERNÃNDEZ (piano), JOHN EDWARDS (double bass) & MARK SANDERS (drums). Agustà Fernández's connection with the London scene grows stronger by the year. His trio with John Edwards and Mark Sanders brings him to the heart of things. Their set played at the Jazz Sigüenza 2007 festival in Spain comprised this free improvisation, which was captured by the fabulous ears of ace engineer Checa R Puértolas & mixer Feran Conangla.
Ferrari, Luc Archives Génétiquement Modifiées. Société II 2008 CD Robot
1. Archives Génétiquement Modifiées (24:46) (2000); 2. Société II (27:35) (1968).
File, Mino Ananke 2009 CD Emanem
Never mind the piano, the pianist is Fine! Milo Fine describes the particular piano as 'more remains than intact', yet he still manages to get the right music out of 'that wonderful beast'. The earlier date is unaccompanied piano improvised mainly at the keyboard. On the other longer concert, recorded towards the likely demise of the 'beast', Fine spends most of his time working on the innards resulting in a very wide range of sound. He also uses some electronics, and is joined by alto saxophonist JARON CHILDS and percussionist DAVU SERU in a trio set that ranges from the minimal to full-on blowing. This should appeal to those who love pianos both in and out of tune.
Full Blast (Brötzmann/Pliakas/Wertmüller) Black Hole 2009 CD Atavistic
To say (FULL BLAST) is a powerhouse is an understatement. These three men don't just rattle the house, they bring it down. They pierce them right through. They don't mess around with subtleties; they electrify the air with the sound of music that is here and now.
Giffoni, Carlos Adult Life 2008 CD No Fun Productions
This is shining and pure electronic music. Adult Life continues Carlos Giffoni's work in slow-building drones but he also imbues these new compositions with subtle structure, melodic sequences and blind-siding rhythmic pulses which recall the many pioneers of electronic composition, among them Cluster, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, and Tangerine Dream. The caustic melding of foreboding abstraction and lively pulse raises Adult Life to a paradigm of the breathing and the immaculate, a strange set of dichotomies finding a shocking common ground. Original Illustrations for this full length by Megan Ellis.
Giffoni, Carlos/Rita, The Two On A Match 2009 2LP No Fun Productions
For myself, working with the different 'warbling' and generative moving lines of modular synth from Carlos Giffoni offered me a chance to investigate many different 'spaces' of tone and line manipulation. The examination and crossing of the different LINES slowly become their own parallel entity as the adjoined and wavy synth lines are further dirtied, cut repeatedly, and joined with the knife of 'gated' and cutting HN pedal work.To further manipulate and display the different lines and HN stylizations, Giffoni had the opportunity to heavily edit the textural work of THE RITA to exude the constantly moving and jutting sense of Giffoni's own pulsing and driving synth decay via the dirtied analog source material of THE RITA. Modular synth and pedal work have been long standing tools in the world of harsh noise, but not often are they crossed over with such investigative and crackling tendencies – a virtual criss-crossing of the different technical lines. - Sam McKinlay(THE RITA) -
Greene, Burton Trio On Tour 2007 LP Get Back
The Chicago-born pianist Burton Greene first made his way to NY in 1962, just as the New Music movement was beginning to gain momentum. The following year he and bassist Alan Silva formed the Free Form Improvisation Ensemble (considered to be the first spontaneous composition group). This historic live recording was originally released on ESP-Disk in 1967.
Haino, Keiji/Zeitkratzer Electronics 2008 CD Zeitkratzer
Haino made music on the guitar and on the drums, on electronic devices, on two Theremins and with his wunderfully changeable tenor; zeitkratzer infolded him, pushed him away, embedded him in noise and carried him through the sound space like on atomising waves.
Hair Police Certainty of Swarms 2008 CD No Fun Productions
The fusion of metal, noise rock, free jazz, industrial, and harsh electronics that makes up The Certainty of Swarms is the rare kind of heterogeneous concoction that is carefully matured, but never lost in pedestrian calculation. A blistering onslaught of metallic-fused noise-murk, Swarms is considered by the band to be one of their most complete statements to date, an aptly blindsiding and developed work drawing from all quarters of their craft.

Kastinen, Arja Ani 2008 CD Temps Oy
All music by Arja Kastinen with 15-, 14- and 10-string kanteles. Improvised music mixing old and new playing techniques, fascinating timbres, roots deeply in distant past. "..Ani is a piece of music in the purest form you can find and an intriguing documentary about this ancient Finnish instrument." - Eelco Schilder, FolkWord Issue.
Kastinen, Arja Vaskikantele 1833 2008 CD Aania
Arja Kastinen (b.1963) received a PhD in Music in 2000 from the Folk Music Department of the Sibelius Academy. Her subject was Karelian kantele improvisation in the 1800's and the acoustics of the 15-string kantele. The music on this CD is a direct result of that research work. The music is free associations and improvisations around different subjects and playing techniques like yhdysasentoinen and the old sekatekniikka, as well as newer techniques, such as harmonics and mattaääni (damping).
Kosk, Patrick Mondweiß 2009 CD Edition RZ
The sounds that open a work do not prescribe a determined form for the composer. Every sound is conceivable in different contexts. Indeed, the 'logic' of the sound material comes up repeatedly in Kosk's notes on his works, of the 'coherence' and 'stringency' of musical forms. But this suggests neither the teleological form of redemptive classical provenance, nor is he concerned with the aesthetics of consistency and integrity of the early avant-garde. Instead, Kosk looks for relationships of tension that do not resolve; he creates antitheses that refuse a synthesis. Kosk's logic is one of fragmentation and unpredictability.

Kren, Kurt Which Way To CA? DVD Index
What does it mean to recognize a documentary gesture in Kren´s films? What is being documented? The documentary images that Kren uses in his works do not arise out of a plan, but instead, come from the right moment, a coincidence, a momentary observation, or a seized opportunity. (Michael Palm)
Kren, Kurt Action Films 2004 DVD Index
Kurt Kren´s Action films are the most tangible way of comprehending the nature of Actionist works of art and events today. I´am not referring to the recognizability of an action´s dramaturgical details, but rather to the fact that Kren´s Action films make it possible to immerse oneself into their structural essence so as to grasp their energetic and aesthetic meaning. Licht, Alan YMCA 2009 LP Family Vineyard
Largely recorded at a 2004 concert at a Cambridge Massachusetts YMCA by Keith Fullerton Whitman, YMCA documents Licht's solo guitar set of the time - a three-part structured improvisation that moves from mournful, layered sustained tones that sound more like a reed organ than a guitar, to a gently plucked middle section, to a final firestorm of loop processing that is a tour de force of "the changing same."
London Improvisers Orchestra Improvisations For George Riste 2008 CD PSI
Founded in 1998, the LIO has been a focal point for the community of improvising musicians in London. This CD features four total improvisations (from 2003 & 2007) selected from the archive of concert recordings made at their monthly appearances at the Red Rose.
Luca, Ghérasim Two Poems 2009 LP Alga Marghen
LP edition including two experimental sound works by Ghérasim Luca, created in close connection to Sten Hanson who invited the Rumenian artist at Fylkingen in the very beginning of the 1970s and made him discover the possibilities of the advanced EMS electronic music studio of Stockholm. The two recordings presented here are quite unique as they are the only poems by Gherasim Luca created through the use of electronic manipulations.
Nicolai, Carsten/Zeitkratzer Electronics 2008 CD Zeitkratzer
This cd documents the cooperation between zeitkratzer and Carsten Nicolai, started nearly a decade ago; a cooperation between an avantgarde ensemble and a non-academic electronic musician. The electronic music of Carsten Nicolai - partly being of even aseptic clearness and quality  suddenly becomes sensual and physical through zeitkratzer's instrumental sounds
Nilsson, Per Anders/Sandell, Sten/Stryd, Raymond Beam Stone 2009 CD PSI
PER ANDERS NILSSON (computer and synthesizer), STEN SANDELL (piano, prepared piano, electronics and voice) & RAYMOND STRID (percussion). Beam Stone was founded a year before this October 2007 recording. The trio consists of three free improvisers, each with a distinctive personal sound. Their aim with Beam Stone is to explore sonic territories with the guidance of different pre-defined concepts. Listening and sonic exploration are considered the essential points of departure.
Northam, Michael Suhina 2009 10"LP Substantia Innominata
Suhina is a notion for the sound of the wind moving through the trees. Instead of doing field recordings of wind MICHAEL NORTHAM tried to capture this feeling & the essence of this process through instrumental recordings from Indonesian flute & keyboard.
Palestine, Charlemagne/Perlonex It Ain't Necessarily So 2009 CD Zarek
In early December 2006 a live performance of Perlonex & Charlemagne Palestine took place at the Viennese jazz club Porgy & Bess, recorded and broadcasted by the Austrian radio ORF in 2006 & remastered at Amann Studios Vienna in 2008. Inspired by the club's name and the chance meeting of a far relative of the Gershwin family Palestine incorporated “It Aint Necessarily So†from the great American songbook into the proceedings. But if you would now expect an apt version of the tune you are definitely on the wrong track. It is more like a recurring quotation of both melody and text embedded in Perlonex' fine drones & raw noisy musique concrete and Palestine's extensive piano strummings.
Parker, Evan Saxophone Solos 2009 CD PSI
Evan Parker's first solo concert on soprano saxophone. Recorded by Martin Davidson in 1975 at the Unity Theatre in London, at that time the preferred concert venue of the Musicans' Co-operative. Originally issued on LP 19 and a limited edition cassette.

Peters, Michael Impossible Music 2009 CD Hyperfunction
This music is based on a strange attractor named after Igor Gumowski and Christian Mira, CERN physicists who discovered it during their research in nonlinear dynamic systems. The surprisingly beautiful graphical representations of this kind of attractor seem to resemble plancton lifeforms from some mathematical ocean. Impossible Music" contains 16 recordings of live improvisations with a software that is based on these attractors. Attractor data were made audible by a digital piano and a sampler usually loaded with percussion samples. Most of the improvisations were done together with Matthias Ebbinghaus (who controlled piano pedals and did the live mix)."
Phillips, Tomas Six Notes 2009 3"CDR Koyuki
Drawing from a diverse electronic and acoustic field, six notes" marks an ongoing effort to explore the possibilities of precision and pleasure in through-composition."
Schlippenbach, Alexander Von Fruilian Sketches 2008 CD PSI
ALEXANDER VON SCHLIPPENBACH (piano), DANIEL D'AGARO (clarinet), TRISTAN HONSINGER (cello). This spontaneous chamber music establishes further advances in the development of improvisation as compositional process. Recorded in the prestigious Arte Suono Studios, Udine in 2008. As you taste this dish, you'll be perhaps so engaged to query about the ingredients. At any given time you could lay this musical output equally at the feet of Jazz, Classical, or 20th Century composed music. But the ingredients won't explain why it's so delicious - it's the spices, seasoning, and flair of the chefs. (From the notes by Ben Young)"

Throughout the last 2-3 years & until now mainly active as an obscure recording project with a shared passion for little instruments and armed with childish curiosity this duo is oscillating between post-plunderphonics, electronica, psychedelic music, fake folk, noise & drones. Lots of strange atmospheres, many weird sounds.

Throbbing Gristle 1st Annual Report 2001 LP Get Back
Abrasive, aggressive and antagonistic, Britain's Throbbing Gristle pioneered industrial music and this is their lost album originally recorded in 1975. These recordings were for some reason held back and the band chose instead to release Second Annual Report as their debut full-length in 1977. These previously unreleased 6 tracks are essentially the birth of industrial music.
Throbbing Gristle Grief 2001 LP Get Back
The classic two-track studio album for the founders of the industrial music genre and the original art terrorists. The 2 tracks “Camera†and “Telephone†provide 30 minutes of Throbbing Gristle at their very best.
Twinkle³ (Richard Scott, David Ross, Clive Bell) Let's Make A Solar System 2009 LP Ini.itu
From the first sinuous tones, later augmented by a wellintegrated mixture of acoustic instruments ( shakuachi, tremoloa, hang drum ), analog sequencing, processing and buchla lightning infra red wizardry, they sketch a (solar) system of their own, revolving around recurring themes, presented in various dispositions. At times nervous, lively, enthusiastically overactive ( but never frenetic ), evoking curious explorers still firmly rooted in melody and dubby basslines, they have the ability to switch off and to glide in an unexpectedly natural manner into more introspective, reflective and soulful moods, even sometimes venturing themselves into darker areas, where a sense of melancholy prevails. LP // 33 RPM // 42 mins. // limited to 250 copies.

Over a decade ago (1992-1995) VOICE OF EYE released three albums with their unique style combining ethnic, ritualistic & folklore influences in an experimental and highly organic way to create a kind of "transcendental drone ambience", using only "real" instruments & self-built devices and an array of electronic effects.
Warleigh, Ray Rue Victor Massé 2008 CD PSI
RAY WARLEIGH (alto saxophone & flute), TONY MARSH (percussion). What I play is absolutely unpremeditated. There are no soundscapes or pictures in my head. But I like melody very much, and I've thought about it a lot. After several attempts to make relatively lavish studio productions we agreed that the music here had the spirit that Ray wanted regardless, or perhaps because, of the absolutely basic way in which it was recorded in 2004. Unbelievably, this is only the second album made under his leadership - the first was made in 1968! His consistently fine playing can be heard in duo with long-term associate Tony Marsh, whose drumming just gets better and better.

Kurt Kren´s achievements with regard to the montage of short cuts in his early works was many years ahead of the rest of the (film)world, in both form and content. Kurt Kren was a pioneere: an avantgardist in the classic and best sense of the word. A filmmaker who knows how to think in images like few others in this trade, and who realized these images in films that are among the »most beautiful« and »most important« in cinematic history.
